Adding Icons to your Home Screen

You can add a Lite App icon to your home screen in two ways.

Automatic Add

When you create a Lite App in Hermit, it will add the Lite App’s icon to your home screen automatically. Automatic Add works on many launchers, but not all. Hermit follows the Android API correctly, and if Automatic Add does not work on your phone, please contact the developer of your launcher app and report this bug.

Unnecessary Branding added by Android

Android (Oreo and above) unfortunately makes your icons smaller and adds unnecessary Hermit branding to the bottom right corner. We don’t like it either, but we have no choice, it is Android adding this, not Hermit.

For a better-looking icon, we recommend using the Touch and Hold technique (see below).

Touch-and-Hold

If Automatic Add does not work on your phone, or you want to get rid of the Hermit branding, add the icon manually.

  1. After adding a Lite App in Hermit, go back to your home screen.
  2. Touch an empty area and hold it (long-click).
  3. Press the “Widgets” button to add a new widget.
  4. Scroll down and pick “Hermit > Create a Lite App” from that list.
  5. From the list that appears, pick the Lite App you want to create a Lite App for.
  6. Boom, good-looking icon on your home screen!

Custom App Icons

Use your Own Icons

  1. Launch your Hermit Lite App.
  2. Tap on the Settings button to open the “Quick Settings” sidebar.
  3. Within Quick Settings, tap on the “More Settings” button.
  4. Under “Theme”, find the current icon, and tap on it to change.
  5. Pick an icon and set it as your new icon!

Icon Packs

  1. Launch your Hermit Lite App.
  2. Tap on the Settings button to open the “Quick Settings” sidebar.
  3. Within Quick Settings, tap on the “More Settings” button.
  4. Under “Theme”, find the current icon, and tap on it to change.
  5. Pick any icon from your installed Icon Packs. (If your icon pack is not visible in the list, please contact the developer of that icon pack for help.)

Transparency Issues

Some photo picker apps (i.e. the external app that is used above to select an icon) do not support transparency. We recommend using Google Photos or a file picker app (instead of a photo picker app) to choose the icon so that it will retain transparent areas of the icon correctly.
